Black Russian Terrier Club of America: Code of Ethics

BRTCA Code of Ethics
Procedure Number: BRTCA-100
Effective Date: October 14, 2021

Our Commitment
The Black Russian Terrier Club of America (BRTCA) has established this Code of Ethics as the standard of conduct for all members involved in the ownership, breeding, selling, buying, and exhibiting of the Black Russian Terrier.
This Code reflects our commitment to protecting the integrity of the breed while promoting responsible ownership, ethical breeding practices, education, and sportsmanship.

Responsibilities of Member Owners & Breeders
Members are expected to:
Breed with Purpose
  • Breed carefully and selectively to improve the Black Russian Terrier.
  • Prioritize health, sound temperament, structure, and breed type over financial gain.
Be Knowledgeable
  • Maintain a working knowledge of genetics, breeding principles, and breed-specific health concerns.
  • Understand both the strengths and weaknesses of their breeding lines.
Place Puppies Responsibly
  • Carefully screen prospective owners.
  • Never knowingly place a dog in a home unable or unwilling to provide proper care.
  • Never place a dog where it may be exploited or used irresponsibly.
Puppy Placement Standards
  • Puppies should never leave before 8 weeks of age.
  • Puppies must receive age-appropriate vaccinations and health care before placement.
Provide Honest Information
Breeders should openly discuss:
  • Health history
  • Temperament
  • Strengths and weaknesses
  • Health clearances
  • Vaccination schedules
  • Worming schedules
  • Grooming and behavioral guidance
Lifetime Responsibility
The BRTCA encourages breeders to remain a lifelong resource for every dog they produce by:
  • Supporting puppy owners
  • Assisting with health or behavioral questions
  • Helping with rehoming if necessary
Maintain Excellent Animal Care
Members should provide:
  • Proper nutrition
  • Clean housing
  • Veterinary care
  • Exercise
  • Socialization
  • Humane treatment
  • Safe environments
Written Agreements
The BRTCA recommends that:
  • All sales agreements be in writing.
  • Pet puppies be sold with contracts designed to prevent accidental or irresponsible breeding.
  • Breeders educate owners regarding responsible reproductive management.
Health Screening Recommendations
The BRTCA strongly recommends health testing for all breeding stock.
Recommended Screenings:
✔ Hip Dysplasia Evaluation (after 24 months)
✔ Elbow Dysplasia Evaluation (after 24 months)
✔ Annual Eye Examination by an ACVO Board-Certified Ophthalmologist
✔ Cardiac Evaluation (after 12 months)
✔ DNA Testing for Juvenile Laryngeal Paralysis & Polyneuropathy (JLPP)
Breeders are encouraged to participate in the Canine Health Information Center (CHIC) program and make health testing results available to prospective puppy buyers.
Temperament
The BRTCA encourages temperament evaluations for breeding dogs to help preserve the stable, confident temperament expected of the breed.
Non-Commercial Breeding
BRTCA members shall not knowingly:
  • Sell dogs to pet stores
  • Supply puppy mills
  • Sell through brokers
  • Provide dogs to laboratories
  • Donate dogs for raffles or contests
  • Participate in commercial breeding operations
Breeding decisions should always be based on improving the breed—not financial gain.
Compliance with BRTCA & AKC Rules
Members agree to:
  • Maintain complete and accurate records.
  • Follow all AKC registration requirements.
  • Comply with all BRTCA rules and regulations.
  • Avoid intentional crossbreeding of Black Russian Terriers.
Education
Members are encouraged to:
  • Educate prospective owners honestly.
  • Support new owners after placement.
  • Share knowledge with fellow breeders.
  • Promote ethical breeding practices.
  • Serve as ambassadors for the Black Russian Terrier.
No officer, director, or member should present personal opinions as official BRTCA positions unless authorized by the Board.
Sportsmanship
BRTCA members are expected to demonstrate respect, professionalism, and integrity.
Members should:
  • Show respect toward fellow exhibitors and breeders.
  • Avoid disparaging comments about others or their dogs.
  • Practice good sportsmanship at all events.
  • Follow the AKC Code of Sportsmanship.
Humane Care
Every Black Russian Terrier deserves:
  • Proper nutrition
  • Fresh water
  • Safe, clean housing
  • Routine veterinary care
  • Exercise
  • Socialization
  • Positive human interaction
  • Humane treatment throughout its lifetime
Members should never maintain more dogs than they can responsibly care for.
Reporting Infractions
Violations of the BRTCA Code of Ethics should be reported to the Corresponding Secretary and will be handled according to the BRTCA Constitution and By-Laws.
Policy Notes
Note 1
If any portion of this Code conflicts with AKC rules, local, state, or federal law, the applicable rule or law shall take precedence.
Note 2
Members are encouraged to recommend revisions to this document at any time by submitting proposed changes, including the relevant procedure number and section, to the Corresponding Secretary for Board review.

The Black Russian Terrier Club of America is dedicated to preserving and protecting the Black Russian Terrier through responsible breeding, ethical conduct, education, and exemplary sportsmanship. Every member shares in this responsibility.
